"The Cosmic Yardstick: Recent Developments and Future Prospects for Baryon Oscillations"

Presented by Nikhil Padmanabhan, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Monday, October 27, 2008, 3:30 pm — Large Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) have now become an integral part of all dark energy programs. I will review both the theoretical underpinnings and the current observational status of baryon oscillations, and then will consider both the challenges and opportunities in the future. Motivated by the statistical power of future observations, I will describe recent efforts to better understand the theory behind BAO with an eye to quantifying (and reducing) systematic errors. Finally, I will try to place baryon oscillations in the context of future large surveys.
