C-AD Accelerator Physics Seminar

"Applications of Linacs in the Medical Field"

Presented by Dr. Samy M. Hanna, Microwave Innovative Accelerators (MINA), Danville, CA

Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 3:00 pm — Large Conferrence Room, Bldg. 911B

One of the effective modalities in treating cancer is Radiation Therapy (RT) which is based on microwave linear accelerators (linacs). In this presentation, we will briefly review the concept of RT, new trends in RT such as Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), and the manufacturing of reliable medical linacs. An example of the IGRT is the TomoTherapy machine. Although the majority of RT linacs operate in the S-band frequency range, some use X-band frequencies where the size and weight of the linac is substantially reduced. The Mobetron, an Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy (IORT) treatment system is one example. Another example is the Stereotactic Radiosurgery machine, the CyberKnife. Another useful medical application of linacs to be highlighted is the electron beam sterilization of medical disposables.
