Physics Colloquium

"Paul Dirac and the religion of mathematical beauty'"

Presented by Graham Farmelo, Northeastern University

Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 3:30 pm — Large Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

Paul Dirac has often been called 'the first truly modern theoretical physicist'.
In his later life, he was obsessed
by his principle of mathematical beauty - the idea that attempts to find the fundamental laws of nature should be guided, above all, by a quest for beauty. This idea, which he first set out in 1939, was 'like a religion' to him. In this talk, I look at the origins of his aestheticism in his training in mathematics and engineering. I also examine the success he had in applying it, and the extent to which it can be regarded as a viable guide to doing fundamental physics.
