5th Vernon Hughes Memorial Lecture

"Particle Physics Without Energy Restrictions"

Presented by Gerald Gabrielse, Leverett Professor of Physics, Harvard University

Thursday, June 17, 2010, 3:00 pm — Large Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

Vernon Hughes's relentless quest to study fundamental symmetries took him to whatever energy scales, apparatus, and facilities were required. This lecture surveys our progress in following four forks from the trail that he blazed.. First is measurement of the fine structure in triplet states of helium. Second is measuring a lepton's magnetic moment (that of an electron by resolving one-quantum cyclotron transitions. Third is using CERN's antiprotons to measure q/m and make antihydrogen, with many nights in CERN's hostel one cost of probing the properties of particles not available at home. Fourth is attempting to measure an electric dipole moment using the intense electric field present within a molecule.
