"Reveal Earth’s Inner Secrets with KamLAND"

Presented by Chao Zhang, California Institute of Technology

Thursday, January 6, 2011, 3:00 pm — Small Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

I will discuss an updated measurement by KamLAND of electron antineutrinos produced by the decay chains of U-238 and Th-232 in the interior of the Earth (“geoneutrinos”). The total exposure of 3.49 x 10^32 target-proton-year represents a nearly fivefold increase over KamLAND’s first published geoneutrino result owing to additional running time and a larger fiducial volume for analysis. The measured flux agrees with the predictions from a bulk silicate Earth model. The null geoneutrino hypothesis is excluded at 99.997% C.L. A homogeneous, fully radiogenic model is also excluded at 98.4% C.L.
