"Finding Majorana fermions in topological superconductors"

The concept of the Majorana fermion has been postulated more than eighty years ago; however, this elusive particle has never been observed in nature. The non-local character of the Majorana fermion can be useful for topological quantum computation. Recently, it has been recognized that topological superconductors (TSC) can support gapless Majorana state at its boundary. Such TSC can either be spinful or spin-polarized. I will first discuss how the Majorana boundary state in a spinful TSC can be detected through anisotropy of its spin susceptibility. Then I will show how one can design a spin-polarized TSC that supports Majorana fermion through proximity effect between half-metal and conventional superconductor.
