""The Tractor": measuring astronomical objects in collections of images"

Presented by Dustin Lang, Princeton University

Thursday, January 12, 2012, 3:00 pm — Small Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

"The Tractor" is a new project to frame astronomical source detection and measurement as an inference problem in a generative (forward) model. This approach naturally handles the multi-band, many-epoch data sets that will be produced by surveys such as Pan-STARRS and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), but it is also well suited to more diverse imaging sets from different instruments and different wavelengths. A key advantage is to be able to represent and propagate covariances between our measurements to higher-level analyses, so that, for example, weak gravitational lensing studies can be done using the highly- blended deep images that will be produced by the next generation of surveys.
