Center for Functional Nanomaterials Seminar Spin crossover in iron bearing minerals under pressure Renata M. Wentzcovitch University of Minnesota . Friday, December 4, 2015 1:30 p.m. Bldg. 735 â€" Conf. Rm. A In this talk we will review the physics of spin crossovers in iron (Fe2+ and Fe3+) in bridgmanite ((Mg,Fe)(Si,Fe)O3-perovskite) and ferropericlase (rock-salt (Mg,Fe)O), the major mineral phases of the Earth's lower mantle. We will introduce the thermodynamics formalism and the phase diagram of this quantum transition. These DFT+U studies have been validated against most experimental data, though sometimes offered alternative interpretations. The physics of pressure induced spin crossovers also sheds light on the nature of temperature or strain induced spin excitations in cobaltite perovskites.
