"Noninvertible symmetry and string tensions beyond N-ality"

Presented by Mendel Nguyen

Thursday, March 3, 2022, 9:30 am — Videoconference / Virtual Event (see link below)

Abstract: In confining gauge theories in 3 and 4 dimensions, it is expected that at asymptotically large distances, the list of string tensions should be characterized by center symmetry (N-ality). However, this characterization seems incomplete; lattice simulations indicate that at intermediate distances, the list of string tensions is actually much larger. A similar phenomenon takes place in 2D Yang-Mills, and I will describe how a novel kind of symmetry (noninvertible 1-form symmetry) provides a natural explanation.
