Shifting Paradigms to Engineer Change in STEM by Sharon Walker

As we face one global crisis after another, one thing is clear: engineers will play an increasingly critical role in solving the incredibly complex challenges facing the world. To fully consider the impacts and consequences of our work on humans, ecosystems, and societies, we must come to the table with diverse perspectives and intentionality about how we grow the STEM talent pipeline. At Drexel University and its flagship College of Engineering, we are thinking about what it means to design and invest in the infrastructure of our future to create equitable and just communities. Held during Women's History Month 2022, this lecture will focus on what it means to be committed to building an inclusive spirit of innovation, collaboration, and discovery for positive impact. It will also emphasize how to be truly proactive: advocating for others and ourselves; amplifying each other to ensure the voices of women and BIPOC/HUGs individuals are respected and heard; shifting focus from quotas to instead strengthening professional development; and offering opportunities for leadership advancement through unique programs like Executive Leadership in Academic Technology, Engineering and Sciences (ELATES) at Drexel.
