The objective of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77) Science Summit is to advance a greater awareness of the contribution and role of science to attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The meeting will bring together researchers worldwide to form meaningful and genuinely global and inclusive research groupings to develop collaborations to achieve the UN SDGs, Agenda 2030, and Local 2030.
One principal theme of the Summit will be inclusive science: in addition to involving more people from diverse backgrounds in the performance of science, it also means providing greater access to scientific outputs. A key question will be how to pursue scientific excellence inclusively, including overcoming policy, regulatory, funding, and other barriers.
The session, being cohosted by BNL and kicked-off with a welcome by Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Director Asmeret Asefaw Berhe, is titled, "Science Capacity Building Globally" and will address how large-scale research infrastructures contribute to delivering the UNs SDGs Agenda 2030 and how they shape the UN Summit of the Future, 2023. It will showcase the major DOE Office of Science User Facilities and programs at Brookhaven, with virtual tours at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (led by John Hill and Kenneth Evans-Lutterodt) and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (led by Chuck Black).
Additionally, there will be session presentations by Esther Takeuchi, Allison McComiskey, and Kerstin Kleese van Dam who will discuss how science enables the UN's SDGs through national and worldwide applications as they relate to energy, climate and data respectfully.
