"STEM Pathway Towards Protein Biomaterials and Innovation—and the Lessons Learned"

Jin Kim Montclare, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, NYU Tandon School of Engineering

Thursday, December 8, 2022, 4:00 pm — Videoconference / Virtual Event (see link below)

Description of Event:
Inspired by nature's biopolymers, Professor Jin Kim Montclare will discuss her work engineering artificial protein materials with entirely new properties and function. She and her lab team employ synthetic and chemical biology to construct materials and endow them with stimuli-responsiveness. In particular, they have fabricated protein-derived nanomaterials: coiled-coil fibers, helix-elastin block polymers, and supercharged coiled-coillipid complexes (or lipoproteoplexes). She and her team investigate the fundamental self-assembly and molecular recognition capabilities of these systems. More importantly, they are able to harness these structures as well as others to interface with small molecule therapeutics, genes, and cells. Kim Montclare will also share her research path and lessons learned along the way.

About the Speaker:
Jin Kim Montclare is a Professor in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at New York University (NYU) Tandon School of Engineering with appointments in Chemistry at NYU, Biomaterials at NYU College of Dentistry, and Radiology at NYU School of Medicine. She is performing groundbreaking research in engineering proteins to mimic nature and, in some cases, work better than nature. She exploits nature's biosynthetic machinery and evolutionary mechanisms to design new artificial proteins. Her lab focuses on two research areas: (1) developing protein biomaterials capable of self-assembling into supramolecular structures and (2) engineering functional proteins/enzymes for particular substrates with the aim of targeting human disorders, drug delivery and tissue regeneration. She also leads the multidisciplinary Convergence of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute. Pre-registration required. Click on link below.
