National Synchrotron Light Source Symposium

"4GLS, The Science, Technology and Politics of the U.K.'s Proposed Low Energy Light Source"

Presented by Elaine Seddon, Daresbury Labs,, United Kingdom

Thursday, March 17, 2005, 10:30 am — Seminar Room, Bldg. 725

The UK's 4GLS proposal is for a national synchrotron radiation source to be sited at Daresbury Laboratory. 4GLS will complement the SR coverage provided by the ESRF and the Diamond Light Source and be based on superconducting energy recovery linac (ERL) technology. It will encompass both free electron laser and spontaneous synchrotron radiation sources; the science focus of the machine will be dynamics and imaging. The challenging accelerator technology involved necessitates a significant R&D programme and as a major part of this a low energy demonstrator machine, the ERL Prototype, is currently under construction at Daresbury.

The talk will explain the 4GLS project status and plans, summarise activities on the ERL Prototype and explore some of new opportunities that are emerging.
