"Insights into Desaturase Mechanism: Origins and Future Possibilities"

Presented by John Shanklin, BNL Biology Department

Friday, March 23, 2007, 10:30 am — John Dunn Seminar Room, Bldg. 463

We are exploring the range of catalysis of Acyl-acyl carrier protein desaturases which catalyze
the introduction of double bonds into saturated acyl-ACPs. I will describe studies relating to the evolutionary
origin of this class of enzymes and on a recently constructed mutant that illustrates the types of novel
activities can evolve from the desaturase scaffold with relatively few sequence changes.
