Condensed-Matter Physics & Materials Science Seminar

"Quantum nematic phases of correlated electrons"

Presented by Vadim Oganesyan, Yale University

Thursday, April 19, 2007, 1:30 pm — Small seminar room, Bldg. 510

Fierce competition between Pauli exclusion principle and strong
interparticle interactions can lead to a rich variety of new types of
order in the ground state of a many-electron system. Here we focus on
one such phase of matter, the quantum nematic liquid, whose existence
has been recently demonstrated in a bilayer ruthenate and earlier in a
two-dimensional electron gas in magnetic field. We review
some of the striking experimental facts and discuss theoretical understanding of
these phenomena.
