We conclude the Introductory series by discussing why
cosmic expansion and finite age (ie a Big Bang) are features of all ordinary Friedmann-LeMaitre cosmologies, and how Einstein's introduction of the cosmological constant can produce a static, eternal universe. The cosmological constant is shown to be indistinguishable from vacuum energy density, and the properties of inflationary, vacuum-energy-dominated de Sitter spaces are discussed. We show how an inflationary phase shortly after the Big Bang can resolve the flatness and homogeneity problems, and
reflect on our long-term future in a new inflationary phase.
