NSLS-II Seminar

"Radiation Protection Studies for the ALBA Facility"

Presented by Xavier Queralt, ALBA FAcility, Spain

Tuesday, June 12, 2007, 10:00 am — NSLS-II Seminar Room, Bldg. 817

In March 2003 the Spanish and Catalan governments established a public consortium for the construction of a synchrotron light source near Barcelona Spain. Alba consists of a 100 Mev injection linac, a booster synchrotron that accelerates the electrons up to 3 GeV and a storage ring that can handle up to 400 mA. Both booster and linac are located in the same ring and will be operated in top-up mode.

Here we discuss the state of the design for radiation protection, the shielding design studies for the accelerators and beam line hutches and the Personal Safety System. We have carried out different studies to design shielding structures and we have estimated electron losses around the whole machine. The shielding requirements for the optical and experimental hutches have been studied and estimates for hutch walls and roofs developed.
