National Synchrotron Light Source Seminar

"Batteries, Polymers, Snowballs and a Little Bit of Kryptonite"

Presented by Pamela Whitfield, Institute of Chemical Process and Environmental Technology (ICPET), CANADA

Monday, January 29, 2007, 1:30 pm — Seminar Room, Bldg. 725

This will be an overview of some of the stdies/developments I’ve been involved with over the past few years at ICPET. The use of combined neutron/resonant diffraction data will be described to untangle the whereabouts of elements in the 4-cation lithium-battery cathode materials LiMn1/3Ni1/3Co1/3O2 and Li1.2Mn0.4Ni0.3Co0.1O2. Next, a new high pressure (up to 125 bar) gas cell for laboratory diffractometers will be covered, that was designed to study processing of polymers under high pressure CO2 (gas/liquid and supercritical). Some of the regulatory and practical headaches, features and some of the first results using CO2 will be presented. A custom cryostream system has been designed for capillary work with laboratory 0-0 vertical goniometers. Some of the issues including issues with existing single-crystal setups, restricted space, problems in early versions, etc will be covered. The features/capabilities of the latest revision will be described. Finally, the technical details behind the ‘kryptonite’ saga that didn’t make it to the BBC will be covered. Some of the features of the mineral and its structure determination from lab powder diffraction data will be described. Besides being of interest to sci-fi fans, the structure and techniques to solve it are of interest for mere mortal scientists.
