"Electron energy-loss spectroscopy for nanostructure analysis"

Presented by Feng Wang, National Institute for Nanotechnology, Edmonton, Canada

Friday, August 8, 2008, 1:30 pm — CFN Bldg.735 Room B

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), is of major importance for electronic and structural information encoded in the core-loss fine structure. However, the information may not be so localized even a sub-Ã… electron probe is precisely positioned onto atomic sites. I will show our investigations of the spatial resolution of the EELS fine structure, as well as our efforts on the spectrum interpretation by multiple-scattering calculations. I will also present some of our results on the component deconvolution for low-loss spectrum recorded from inhomogenous specimen. The surface component can be simply separated from the bulk by the deconvolution and compared to dielectric-theory calculations to understand the bounding effects.
