Center for Functional Nanomaterials Seminar

"Nano-mechanics of Nano-carbon"

Presented by James Hone, Columbia University

Wednesday, January 21, 2009, 11:00 am — Bldg. 735 - Seminar Rm, 2nd floor

This talk will describe our recent work in fundamental understanding of the mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes and graphene, and their application in nano-electromechanical devices (NEMS). This includes recently-published measurements of the mechanical stiffness (1) and electromechanical response (2) of carbon nanotubes of known chirality, and measurement of the stiffness and ultimate strength of single graphene sheets (3). More recent work includes analysis of the Raman spectrum of graphene under uniaxial strain; measurement of thickness-dependent friction in graphene; and electrical readout and mass sensing properties of graphene nanomechanical resonators.
