Optical Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) is a powerful technique for probing symmetry-breaking processes in materials. Two examples, the use of SHG for investigating ferroelectricity in BaTi2O5 and the dynamics of charge carrier processes in low-k dielectric materials (LKDs) will be discussed. Measurements with electrical/optical techniques to determine the basic electronic properties of LKDs, and interpretations of these results in the context of reliability, will also be presented
