"Magnetization processes in flux-closure micron-sized dots"

While magnetism traditionally deals with the switching of magnetic domains, magnetization processes inside magnetic domain walls(DWs) and vortices are attracting an increasing interest. Such physics is best studied in micron-size dots that spontaneously display a flux-closure configuration of magnetization, which are also a playground for storing several bits of information in one single dot. Our work in this field is based on micron-size self-assembled epitaxial dots. Elongated Fe(110) dots display a Bloch domain wall (DW). Using quasistatic magnetic fields we demonstated the controlled switching of an inner degree of freedom of the DW, the so-called Neel caps. Co(111) dots have a trigonal symmetry and display a vortex instead of a DW. In these we demonstrated the control the chirality of the flux-closure making use of the tilted facets, a specificity of self-assembled dots. In these studies we combined MFM, Lorentz microscopy, XMCD-PEEM and micromagnetic simulations.
