"Phytotechnologies as Primary Public Health Prevention"

Presented by William Suk, Director, Superfund Research Program, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health, Research Triangle Park, NC

Friday, May 21, 2010, 11:00 am — John Dunn Seminar Room, Bldg. 463

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Superfund Research Program (SRP) advances its mission to reduce the public health burden of hazardous substances through interdisciplinary research. Critical to this mission is the interplay between the biomedical sciences and the engineering sciences, whereby the observed human health effects of hazardous substances can be prevented by the technologies developed for remediation. From the perspective of the SRP, phytotechnologies have the potential not only to reduce the levels of toxicants in environmental media, but also to prevent exposure. Therefore, it is important to realize that phytotechnologies are, in essence, primary prevention within the context of public health. This new direction in phytotechnology research can be accomplished through partnering with public health researchers to ensure that technology development efforts are focused on the prevention of environmental exposures. The sustainable nature of phytotechnologies (both in terms of economics and energy consumption) further reinforces its potential to reduce exposures within resource-stretched public health agencies worldwide.
