"Polysaccharide Nanocomposites: An Exercise in Biomimicry"

Presented by William Winter, Chemistry Department and Director of Cellulose Research Institute, SUNY-College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), Syracuse, NY

Friday, July 16, 2010, 11:00 am — John Dunn Seminar Room, Bldg. 463

The plant cell wall and the exoskeleton of a lobster are exquisite examples of nanocomposite utilization for macroscale applications. They predate modern science by millions of years. Today, we and others seek to learn from these systems, characterize their composition and structure. We also fabricate our own materials either containing biobased nanoparticles or, in some cases, templated from them. In this talk we will consider both methods for exploring the structures and interactions that are essential to the properties of the natural nanocomposites and the approaches that are being taken to make our own materials. Finally it should be noted that much of this work is compatible with the concept of a biorefinery and the particles themselves can be created as co-products to ongoing efforts in biofuels.
