Biology Department Seminar

"Algae Biofuels: Overcoming Biological Challenges Through Strain Development"

Presented by Jurgen Polle, Department of Biology and Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center (AREAC), Brooklyn College of CUNY, Brooklyn, NY

Friday, May 6, 2011, 11:00 am — John Dunn Seminar Room, Bldg. 463

Microalgae have been considered for biofuels production for several decades. However, out of tens of thousands of known species still only very few species are exploited in mass culture. This relatively low number of used species is due to major challenges faced when microalgae are grown in mass culture. Some challenges to overcome are of biological nature and will be discussed. Approaches to increase biomass productivities in mass culture that will be presented include results on bioprospecting for novel strains of microalgae from natural environments and strain engineering for improved photosynthetic productivities.
