"Development of Skutterudite Thermoelectric Materials and Modules"

Presented by Junqing Guo, Materials Research Laboratory, Furukawa Co., Ltd., Japan

Friday, July 15, 2011, 4:15 pm — Bldg. 480

Multi-filling with La, Ba, Ga, Ti in p-type skutterudite and Yb, Ca, Al, Ga, In in n-type skutterudite remarkably reduces their thermal conductivity, resulting in enhancement of their dimensionless figures of merit to ZT=0.7 for the p-type (La, Ba, Ga, Ti)0.9(Fe, Co)4Sb12 and ZT=1.0 for the n-type (Yb, Ca, Al, Ga, In)0.7(Co, Fe)4Sb12. A thermoelectric module technology suitable to these materials has been developed. The electrodes co-exist stably with the p/n elements in the module’s working temperature range of room temperature to 600ºC. The maximum output of the module with a size of 50×50×8mm is 24W under the condition of its hot/cold sides=600/50ºC. To protect the module from oxidation, encapsulation of module was studied.
