"Self-Organization of Ultra Cold Atoms in Optical Cavities"

Presented by M. J. Bhaseen, Cambridge University

Thursday, March 8, 2012, 1:30 pm — Small Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

In the last few years there has been tremendous progress in studying strongly correlated systems using ultra cold atoms in optical potentials. Recent experiments performed in pumped optical cavities have observed a self-organization transition to a novel type of "supersolid"
phase [1,2]. This transition is governed by a non-equilibrium variant of the ubiquitous Dicke model, describing two-level systems or "spins"
coupled to light. I will discuss recent predictions of new dynamical phases in these non-equilibrium systems.
