President Harry S. Truman will be known forever as the world leader who authorized the use of nuclear weapons. It was Truman’s decision to bring the Second World War to a conclusion by using atomic weapons against the Empire of Japan in 1945. During his presidency, Truman also decided to initiate the building and stockpiling of a huge atomic arsenal and to develop a second generation nuclear weapon, the hydrogen bomb (or “superâ€). It was also President Truman who insisted on civilian control over nuclear weapons, and he refused to deploy nuclear weapons at several times of crisis, most significantly during the Korean War of 1950 – 53.
