Supporting U.S. Nuclear Security and Safeguards: Understanding threats, creating new technologies, and influencing policy


Susan Pepper is the Chair of the Nonproliferation and National Security Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Ms. Pepper holds a Bachelor's and Master's of Science in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from Stony Brook University. She began her career at Brookhaven Lab in structural safety analysis of nuclear facilities. In 1993 she joined the Lab's International Safeguards Project Office (ISPO), which manages technology support provided by the United States to the International Atomic Energy Agency, and shortly afterwards, she became the ISPO Liaison Officer posted in Vienna, Austria, at the U.S. Mission to International Organizations in Vienna, where she was responsible for interacting with International Atomic Energy Agency representatives to ensure that the technology transfer activities were meeting their needs. Upon return to Brookhaven Lab, she became the head of the ISPO, a position she held for 12 years. She was the Coordinator of the U.S. Support Program to IAEA Safeguards from 1996 to 2013. She is a Fellow and the current President of the Institute for Nuclear Materials Management.
