Our 2021 Outreach, Education, and Workforce Development activities resulted in substantial impacts to bring more awareness to quantum information science, C2QA, and the different career paths that can attract the future workforce. We completed our fall Quantum Thursdays lecture series with 25 lectures in 2021 that targeted the student and minority-serving institution communities. It also provided postdocs and early career members of C2QA the opportunity to present their research and support their career development. The spring series starts on February 3.

The Quantum Career Fair was held in September and attracted approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate students and postdocs from around the nation. The Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE) asked us to host the career fair in 2022 and broaden it to a National Quantum Information Science Research Centers event in partnership with all five of the Centers.

2022 activity planning is underway with some important dates and support needed from our C2QA partners.

  • DOE and Brookhaven Lab will host a virtual Mini-Semester internship program in January to include a quantum workshop for an estimated 60 students.
  • DOE’s summer internship programs application process closed on January 12. We need mentors from C2QA to support these students.
  • Registration opens on January 31 for the Quantum Computing Summer School’s six-week program, beginning June 6. Teacher Assistants might be needed, should this event go virtual.
  • A Postdoc program will be launched in early 2022 to include a journal club, professional development activities, and mentoring opportunities for postdocs to support undergraduate students. Discussions regarding pulling together a seed funding opportunity in 2023 for postdocs from different thrust areas to apply to work on a co-design project related to the fulfilling the Center’s mission are ongoing.
