Motivation
The Seventeenth Atmospheric Chemistry Colloquium for Emerging Senior Scientists, ACCESS XVII, will be convened July 27–29, 2023 at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, NY. ACCESS is convened every other year since 1991 in conjunction with the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in Atmospheric Chemistry. Selected Participants will attend both ACCESS XVII and the GRC in Atmospheric Chemistry, which will be held at the Grand Summit Hotel Sunday River in Newry, Maine from July 30 to August 4, 2023. All expenses for the selected participants at both ACCESS and the GRC, including registration for the GRC and transportation to and from originating locations, will be provided.
The purpose of ACCESS is to bring together young researchers in atmospheric chemistry and representatives of the principal federal government agencies that fund atmospheric chemistry research to engage in scientific discussion and interaction. The meetings will forge future professional relationships, and the entire atmospheric science community will benefit by becoming more aware of innovations in atmospheric chemistry through presentations by ACCESS participants and through these interactions.
To be eligible to participate in ACCESS, an applicant must have received a doctorate from an accredited university after September 1, 2020, or the applicant's main thesis advisor must certify that in all probability the applicant will have received a doctorate by August 31, 2023. The applicant's thesis or postdoctoral research must be in the field of atmospheric chemistry. To further the goals and intent of ACCESS, primary consideration will be given to those applicants who will be in a postdoctoral position (or equivalent career stage) over those who have, or will have by the time of the ACCESS colloquium, secured a faculty position or a position as a permanent research scientist.
Attendance at ACCESS is limited to 25 participants, who are selected by a committee based on the significance and achievement of the applicant's thesis or postdoctoral research, the application, and a letter of recommendation from the applicant's primary thesis advisor or postdoctoral advisor. Participation in ACCESS is highly competitive, as there are typically around 100 candidates, coming from the most prestigious institutions in the US and abroad. There are no nationality requirements regarding participation.
