General Lab Information

The Department of Energy is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation in the United States. In light of developing circumstances, all projects will be submitted and judged virtually.

Motivation

The goal of the Science Fair is to generate an interest in and excitement about science and engineering for all ages. This contest provides an opportunity for students to showcase their projects to peers and judging teams consisting of Brookhaven National Laboratory scientific and engineering staff and elementary school teachers. Students will gain experience using science and engineering practices, as well as the scientific method or engineering design process (see project requirements and judging criteria for more information).

Who Can Participate in the Science Fair?

This competition is for Kindergarten through sixth grade students who have already won their school science fair competition. In 2022, the contest is only available for New York State schools in the following counties: Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), Nassau, New York (Manhattan), Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), and Suffolk. Homeschool students from these counties are also eligible if they win a science fair competition run by an official homeschool organization. Homeschool competitions must have at least 10 projects per grade level.
