Motivation

The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is inviting the participation of the scientific community in its next Science Planning Workshop, which will be held on June 20–21, 2024 . The ATF is a DOE Office of Science User Facility that supports DOE’s Accelerator Stewardship mission. It facilitates a broad range of research and development activities by users from universities, national laboratories, government agencies, and industry. These activities are enabled by ATF’s unique beam sources, which include a long-wave infrared (LWIR) laser operating at a wavelength of 9.2 μm and ~5 TW of peak power, high brightness 75 MeV electron beams, and a terawatt-class Ti:sapphire laser.

To meet the evolving needs of the user community interested in advanced accelerator and laser capabilities, it is necessary to periodically review present and future facility plans to ensure that current user needs will continue to be met and that the facility evolves in concert with the most pressing future research directions. This periodic review is facilitated through Science Planning Workshops.

Topics or Session Information

The last ATF Science Planning Workshop, held in 2019, focused on the assessment of capabilities required to enable priority research directions (PRDs) in three principal research areas:

  • Science enabled by high-power LWIR laser.
  • Science enabled by an electron beam driver.
  • Science enabled by a combined contribution of multiple beams (lasers and/or electron beams).
