Motivation

The course is based on the fire protection requirements in NFPA 45, Fire Protection in Laboratories Using Chemicals, 2024 Edition and the International Fire Code (IFC), 2024 Edition Chapter 38.

The 12-hour workshop will:

  • Familiarize participants with the contents of NFPA 45, IFC Chapter 38 and how to apply them to research
  • Focus on laboratory ventilation and operations with an emphasis on the storage, use, and handling of flammable and combustible chemicals in
  • Detail best management practices for fire prevention and laboratory safety
  • Review lessons learned from accidents and fires in laboratories

This NFPA 45-Fire Safety in Research Labs is not open to the public. To be eligible to attend, all participants must register online by October 14, 2024. For questions or assistance with registering, please contact the workshop coordinator.

Workshop Speakers

Jason D Johnson, CFPS, Vice President at Jensen Hughes. He has a BS in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology with 25 years of experience in fire protection engineering. Jason has as extensive experience working on projects of higher education laboratories, pharmaceutical laboratories, and oil and gas laboratories. Jason has been a member of NFPA 45 since 2011.

Bruce Campbell, FSFPE, is Vice President – DOE Market Leader at Jensen Hughes. He has a BS in Fire Protection/Industrial Safety with 45 years of experience in fire protection engineering. For 20 years he worked at the former Rocky Flats Plant near Denver, CO managing the fire protection programs. Bruce has been involved with seven NFPA code development committees. He is a Fellow in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, received the Special Achievement Award from the NFPA for his work as Chair of NFPA 80, received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Under Secretary for Nuclear Security Administrator, NNSA, and is a recipient of DOE’s Walter W. Maybee award.
