Science- and Technology-based Development for Long Island and Beyond
Discovery Park is a new vision for the gateway to the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, the only multidisciplinary national lab in the Northeast and a major destination on Long Island's Innovation Corridor.
Discovery Park is envisioned to be a flexible platform for developers, collaborators, and entrepreneurs to advance science- and technology-based economic development—for Long Island, New York State, and beyond.
Developers, general contractors, finance professionals, and others are invited to explore new opportunities and provide feedback at Discovery Park Industry Day on Thursday, September 24, 2020, starting at 9:30 a.m.
Registration is now closed.
Discovery Park: A Concept for Privately Owned and Operated Facilities on Publicly Accessible DOE Land
The proposed concept for Discovery Park includes the creation of more than 600,000 gross square feet of privately owned and operated facilities on approximately 40–60 acres of publicly accessible DOE land. Leveraging Brookhaven's ongoing operations, it will offer developers an opportunity to propose, build, and operate facilities that are:
- Complementary to the Department of Energy and Brookhaven Lab's missions
- Consistent with the intent of Discovery Park
- Able to demonstrate a solid business case (self-sufficiency will be critical)
Industry Day is sponsored by DOE and Brookhaven Lab to share the vision for Discovery Park and seek feedback from developers, with interest in understanding their challenges or specific needs. This is a test of the viability for the Discovery Park endeavor. To improve the likelihood of success, feedback from the private developer community is essential during and after the September 24 event.
Connect, Discuss, and Tour
Industry Day participants will receive a briefing on the vision, plans and development opportunities for Discovery Park, which may include privately funded and operated:
- Extended-stay housing available to visiting researchers and guests
- Public science education facilities
- Technology partnership facilities
- Food and other services
Participants will also meet key members of the DOE and Brookhaven teams, who will describe the proposed long-term ground lease methodology for enabling facility development and seek feedback. *(view the notional draft ground lease and submit feedback and questions here)*. An optional tour of a world-class research facility at Brookhaven Lab is available for in-person attendees the day of the event. The agenda is available here.
