Laboratory Values & Behaviors
We all live by a set of personal values and behaviors. Similarly, as an institution, it's important to work together from an agreed-upon set of values and behaviors to guide our actions and decision making. Our BNL Values & Behaviors are intentionally simple and straightforward; most of us live by them already. I believe it's important for us to have a public discussion and an understanding of these shared values and expectations. Our seven values are:
Leadership
We model our values through our actions. We communicate our expectations and Laboratory requirements and know how well they are being followed. We motivate and empower individuals to reach their full potential through opportunities for growth and recognition.
Integrity
We honor our commitments; we do what we say we will do. We follow Lab policies and procedures. We are ethical, open, and transparent.
Responsibility
We hold ourselves and each other accountable for our actions and for delivering on our expected results and commitments. We are contributing members of our community and value our stakeholders and their perspectives.
Innovation
We strive to pioneer new directions and achieve revolutionary breakthroughs in science and operations. We embrace a questioning attitude and are open to various points of view. We take initiative and strive for continuous improvement.
Teamwork
We work cooperatively and supportively across organizational boundaries with the Laboratory goals as our top priorities. We value our many partnerships that contribute to the advancement of science, technology, and education.
Respect
We value everyone and the contributions they can provide. We are cooperative, showing common courtesy and civility. We recognize the important role each of us plays in the success of the Laboratory.
Safety, Security, and Environmental Stewardship
We take actions to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of ourselves, our co-workers, our guests, and the community. We protect and sustain our environment. We protect our people, our assets, and national security. We raise concerns and act to prevent injuries, operational events, and insults to the environment.
Each value also has expected behaviors that are meant as a guide to illustrate the value. These values and behaviors are crucial to building the Lab's leadership capability among staff, the management team, and the Lab itself.
