Researchers From Stony Brook University And Brookhaven National Lab Explore Existing And Potential Bench To Bedside Collaborations At First Clinical Research Day
Scientists convene at SBU School of Medicine for a day of discovery on May 13

STONY BROOK, N.Y., May 12, 2011 — The first Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory Clinical Research Day will be held on May 13 at Stony Brook University Medical Center. The day kicks off a gathering of scientists with the purpose of fostering future research collaboration in the development of new biomedical discoveries and technologies between the two institutions. Faculty from Stony Brook University School of Medicine will discuss their individual research, network, and display posters about their research with a trove of Brookhaven scientists who can share details about initiatives and resources available at the Federal research lab in Upton.
"Research topics that will be presented feature aspects of translational medicine," said Kenneth Kaushansky, M.D., MACP, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences and Dean, School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. "In translational medicine, the goal is to bring scientific discovery from the 'bench' to the bedside — a point at which we create new treatments and technologies, including medical devices and clinical applications.”
“Brookhaven National Laboratory has a long tradition of pioneering multidisciplinary research with significant impact on medical applications,” said Dr. Doon Gibbs, Deputy Director for Science and Technology at Brookhaven Lab. “We are excited about the potential of the Stony Brook/Brookhaven team to accelerate translation into clinical practice.”
Among the 20 research poster titles: “Brain Imaging and Obesity,” “Brain Chemistry of Aggressive Personality,” “Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapy for Human Diseases,” and “Optimizing Treatment of Neuropathies and Targeting Tissues in Botox Injections.” Descriptive language on the posters is geared toward the general public. The posters will be on display in the Stony Brook University Hospital lobby from 12:30 p.m. on May 13 until 5:00 p.m. on May 15.
“The synergies that have been created between researchers at Stony Brook and Brookhaven are strong,” says Dr. Kaushansky. “This event is intended to cultivate future research and leverage Brookhaven’s scientific expertise and Stony Brook’s clinical expertise, essential ingredients along the road to creating new medical technologies and therapies.”
“The long-term goal of each research project is to use cutting-edge science from Brookhaven and Stony Brook to drive the development of commercial medical products to aid either a current or future unmet clinical need,” adds Sharon Nachman, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Dean for Research, Stony Brook University School of Medicine.
The event begins at 9:00 a.m., with welcoming remarks from Stony Brook and Brookhaven leadership. After the opening remarks will be a networking breakfast (10:00 to 11:30), followed by poster sessions and poster standby in the hospital lobby (11:30 to 12:30 p.m.).
