National Energy Research Association Meets Week of October 4 at Brookhaven Lab

On October 4-7, Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) will co-host the Fall 2010 meeting of the Association of State Energy Research and Technology Transfer Institutions (ASERTTI). The program will include presentations on energy programs and research activities from across the U.S.

“With energy research a top national priority, we are pleased to have these major state institutions from across the country bring their ideas here for discussion and to identify potential collaborators,” said Bill Horak, who chairs Brookhaven’s Nuclear Energy Department.

Meeting sessions are open to interested Lab staff, and will be held at the Brookhaven Center.

Agenda topics include Brookhaven Lab’s energy R&D and technology commercialization programs, LIPA’s solar and offshore wind projects, and a session examining several state, regional, and national technology innovation models.

Brookhaven presenters on Tuesday, October 5, include Walter Copan, head of the Office of Technology Commercialization and Partnerships, which brings together a diverse array of skills in science, business, marketing, and law to foster intellectual property creation, licensing, business development, and new company start-ups. This session looks at Brookhaven’s approach and successes in moving technology from R&D to deployment. On Wednesday, October 6, Tom Butcher of Brookhaven’s Energy Resources Division will offer his overview of the Lab’s solar thermal project. Major new solar activities are drawing attention for research to the planned 200-acre solar farm.

Attendees will also hear an overview of ASERTTI programs and the latest Washington, DC update. For more information, please visit the ASERTTI website today to access the most up-to-date agenda.
