The following Q&A was originally published by the U.S. Department of Energy as part of a larger National Hispanic Heritage Month series.

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the diverse history of generations of Latinos who have shaped our Nation. Their contributions and the influence of Hispanic Americans on the fabric of American history, culture, and achievement are invaluable — including their contribution to the Department of Energy (DOE).

We asked our Hispanic team members here at DOE about their very own professional accomplishments and the nuggets of wisdom they’d like to pass on.

Jennefer Maldonado

Senior Applications Analyst, Brookhaven National Laboratory

What do you do at DOE and what excites you about it?

I work for Brookhaven National Laboratory in the collider accelerator department. I develop and maintain applications to be used for operations of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. This excites me because the work I do helps the controls systems which directly supports the discoveries made at our facility. It's a cool experience to see your work go from development and testing to live in the main controls room.

Over the past year at DOE, what achievement by you or your office are you most proud of?

I am the most proud of becoming a board member for Brookhaven Women in Science. I get to highlight women across the lab on our Facebook and LinkedIn pages to inspire other women to pursue careers in or in support of STEM fields. I was nominated to become the vice president for the upcoming year and cannot wait to see what we can do to help advocate for women across the lab.

What is the best career advice you’ve gotten?

The best career advice I have gotten is to join employee resource groups. I am a member of Brookhaven Women in Science, Pride Alliance, and the Early Career Resource Group. By joining these ERGs I have created a network of friends across the lab and also made connects with the diversity office. My personal goals are to further the labs mission of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Working with these groups gives me access to resources, workshops, and social events that expose me to others who have similar goals. Not only that but I have people to eat lunch with, talk about difficult tasks, and get more career advice.
