Motivation

The field of nuclear physics is currently undergoing a paradigm shift towards Streaming Readout technologies that have the potential to replace the classic triggered readout electronics that has been used for many decades. This conventional trigger signal to start the readout is now getting replaced by a data selection realized in software (and to some extent, in firmware).

This approach has a number of advantages:

  • Since all data is already in the digital domain, latency constraints on the selection algorithm are less tight compared to a hardware trigger;
  • The software algorithm can access all detector information, leading to a better noise suppression and increased efficiency;
  • Streaming readout can be improved by software and firmware updates and can be more agile than a trigger scheme implemented in hardware.

This workshop aims to bring the experts from different detectors, groups, and facilities together to discuss their progress, developments, and share ideas and new knowledge about this emerging field in data acquisition technologies.

Topics at the workshop include:

  • Data rate requirements
  • Timing requirements
  • Data format considerations
  • Detector support and existing test setups
