Toshi Tanabe is the head of Insertion Devices Group for the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) Project. He has responsibility for the oversight of insertion device development, procurement, installation and operation for the project, and will be responsible for the Insertion Device Magnetic Measurement Facility.

Toshi joined the staff of the Storage Ring and Insertion Device Section of the Accelerator Division at NSLS as a Physicist in September 2004. He was the head of the magnetic measurement laboratory and responsible for insertion devices and magnet development at NSLS. He supervised the development of the first cryo-ready in-vacuum insertion device for the X25 beamline installed in December 2005 at the X-ray ring.

Toshi obtained his Ph.D. in applied physics from Columbia University in 1990, and spent one year as a post doc at INFN-LNF in Frascati, Italy on the DAFNE project before becoming a staff scientist at RIKEN in Japan, where he worked for 12 years. He did his doctoral research at BNL in the late 1980s on measurement of photon statistics of wiggler radiation, while working on his Ph.D. While at SPring8, he collaborated with the NSLS in the design and construction of the magnet arrays for the first in-vacuum undulator (IVUN), installed at X13.
