As the Accelerator Division Director at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), Timur Shaftan advances the mission of the facility by leading scientific, technical, and professional staff to design, construct, and operate a state-of-the-art accelerator complex. In this role, Timur also furthers the design of new accelerator components, research in accelerator physics, and leads the development of new capabilities.

Expertise

Research Activities

Timur’s scientific interests focus on accelerator design, especially next-generation synchrotron light sources and free electron lasers, and industrial accelerator systems.

Professional Appointments

From 2013 to 2015, Timur initially served as the NSLS-II Commissioning Coordinator before taking on the role of NSLS-II Storage Ring Manager and, in 2014, Deputy Director of the NSLS-II Accelerator Division. He worked as the Accelerator Division Director since 2016.

From 2006 to 2014, Timur served as the Injection Systems Group Leader at NSLS-II. Before Timur joined NSLS-II project at it's inception in 2006, he was an associated scientist, and later a scientist, at Brookhaven’s previous light source, the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) since October of 2000.

Timur joined Brookhaven National Laboratory in February of 2000 as a postdoc at NSLS-II and ATF.

Prior to joining Brookhaven Lab, Timur worked, from 1990 to 1999, at Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk, Russia as a research scientist.
