Douglas W. Blayney

Doug Blayney is medical oncology physician who specializes in breast cancer. His research focuses on quality improvement in cancer care systems, new drug development, and improvement of the patient experience. Dr. Blayney has worked and led academic and community oncology practices and national professional organizations. At the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), he initiated the Society’s first internet presence, was founding Editor-in-Chief of its flagship practice journal, and as President, started the ASCO Quality Symposium and began planning for ASCO’s CancerLinq. At Wilshire Oncology (a Los Angeles based physician-owned multidisciplinary oncology practice), he inaugurated its use of just-in-time drug inventory management system, an electronic health record in 2000, and was principal investigator on a national cooperative group clinical trial. At the University of Michigan and Stanford, he improved patient-centered care, promoted multidisciplinary care teams and implemented outpatient quality improvement programs. He is on the scientific advisory boards of several early stage companies, including Artelo Biosciences, Madorra, BeyondSpring Pharma and MantaCares.
Dr. Blayney received the first Ellen Stovall Award for Innovation in Patient Centered Care from the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, and the Joseph V. Simone Award and Lecture for Excellence in Quality and Safety in the Care of Patients with Cancer from ASCO. He is a past president of ASCO, was a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Growth Factor Guideline panel and is a past voting member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Oncology Drugs Advisory Committee and the NCCN Board of Directors. He was educated at Stanford University (BSEE ’72), received medical education and training at the University of California at San Diego, the National Cancer Institute, and is author or co-author of over 120 peer-reviewed publications.
