Vanessa Lopez-Marrero

Computational Scientist, Computational Science Initiative at Brookhaven National Laboratory

Dr. Vanessa Lopez-Marrero is a Computational Scientist with the Computational Science Initiative at Brookhaven National Laboratory and an affiliate at the Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) at Stony Brook University. As of August 2023, she is also a member of the Advanced Scientific Computing Advisory Committee (ASCAC) that provides independent scientific advice to the Department of Energy. Prior to joining Brookhaven Lab she was a Research Staff Member in the Mathematical Sciences Department at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. In her early career, she held postdoctoral appointments at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She holds a Ph.D. in Scientific Computing from UIUC's Computer Science Department, with a Certificate of Specialization in Computational Science and Engineering, a B.A. in Mathematics from Rutgers University (New Brunswick, N.J.), and a B.B.A. in Computer Information Systems from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras.

Her research interests lie generally in computational and applied mathematics, dynamical systems, and modeling and numerical simulation of complex systems. She has expertise in the numerical solution of partial differential equations, numerical linear algebra, and inverse problems. Recently, she has started working on problems dealing with measure transport, as well as scientific machine learning.
