Submission Guidelines for the Photowalk Contest

After your Photowalk at Brookhaven Lab, you’ll have the chance to submit some of your best images to our photo contest. A panel of Brookhaven Lab judges will determine a shortlist of 10 winners, which will then be featured on our website.  

Additionally, Brookhaven will forward the top five photos, as judged by that same panel, to the global photo competition held by the particle physics website Interactions.org.

Rules for submitting photos to the competition

1. To participate in the photo contest, you must fill out and sign a photo release form at the Brookhaven Lab Photowalk on Sept. 22, 2012.
2. You may submit up to five photographs, and all images must have been taken during the Photowalk.
3. All images must be submitted by noon EST on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012.
4. All images must be submitted in digital format, either online (details for online upload option coming soon) or by sending a CD or DVD. No hard copy prints will be accepted for judging.
5. Files can be color or grayscale. Final files can be either unaltered or altered in photo editing programs as long as all original image material was gathered with a camera the day of the Photowalk event. Photographers should retain all original images in case the judges require proof of source material.
6. File format must be JPEG, with file size not to exceed 20 MB for each image. File size/resolution must be large enough that Brookhaven Lab can produce 8x10-inch prints for an exhibit of the winning photos. We require at least 2500 pixels in the long dimension.
7. Files must be named in the following way: last name of photographer, followed by an underscore, followed by the first name, followed by an underscore, followed by a 2-digit sequence number starting with 01. Examples for photographer John Smith: smith_john_01, smith_john_02, etc.
8. Alternatively, CDs and DVDs can be dropped off or sent to the Brookhaven Lab Media and Communications Office. The shipping/mailing address is:

Winners entered into global contest

Winners of the local Brookhaven Lab photo contest will be notified in October. The top five photos from both Brookhaven and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois will be sent to the global Interactions.org contest in December, and those finalists will be notified in January 2013. Winners of the global contest will be announced at a later date in early 2013.
