External Code of Conduct

At the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, everyone has a role in accelerating pathways to scientific discovery and technological innovation that transform the world.

Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC (BSA) manages the Lab on behalf of the DOE’s Office of Science.

This External Code of Conduct sets the standards expected of individuals who are not employed by BSA but are members of the extended Laboratory community, including guests, facility users, visitors, students, educators, and contractors, all of whom must adhere to BSA’s values and this code. This code aligns with BSA’s Code of Conduct for staff.

BSA values leadership, integrity, responsibility, innovation, safety, security, and environmental stewardship, respect, and teamwork. BSA staff and the extended Laboratory community must be committed to treating each other in an ethical manner with respect through common courtesy, civility, and effective communication. BSA will not tolerate harassment, discrimination, or retaliation by or against individuals who are part of the Laboratory community.

Members of the Laboratory community must:

  • Work in adherence with BSA’s values and expectations of conduct
  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, orders, directives, and policies

Fabricating, falsifying, or plagiarizing data or records is not permissible. All are responsible for ensuring data and property are used only for appropriate purposes and protected from unauthorized access, loss, or misuse.

BSA may address any violations of this code. Results can include debarring individuals from the Lab site and systems, terminating relationships, or informing affiliate organizations such as employers, institutions, or programs about misconduct. BSA may also report violations of law or regulations to the appropriate authorities. BSA is not responsible for any costs incurred as a result of violations.

This code does not change any existing agreements with BSA. It does not establish a contractual or employment relationship.

If you become aware of conduct that may be inconsistent with this External Code of Conduct, you can communicate this to your host or EthicsPoint, which is hosted by an independent third party.
