Brookhaven National Lab Director Search

Brookhaven Science Associates is seeking a nationally recognized leader with a demonstrated record of high achievement in scientific research, strategic direction, and effective management of complex laboratory operations to serve as the Director of Brookhaven National Laboratory.

On September 23, 2025, Brookhaven National Laboratory Director JoAnne Hewett announced her decision to step down after two years as the Lab’s top executive and president of Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA), the organization that manages the Laboratory for DOE’s Office of Science. Former Deputy Director for Science and Technology John Hill has been serving as interim director since Hewett’s departure.

The BSA Board has initiated a broad search to identify Hewett’s successor. Co-chaired by Jenny Anaya, Battelle’s vice president, strategic human capital, and Steven Ashby, Battelle’s senior vice president for strategic partnerships for Battelle’s National Laboratory Management & Operations business, the committee features respected individuals from both inside and outside the Lab. See the search committee's charge and membership.

This is an exciting and important time for the Laboratory. The search committee intends to identify a nationally recognized leader who will inspire and engage the Laboratory and its regional, national, and international partners with a compelling vision for the future. The Lab has an exciting future as it designs and constructs the Electron-Ion Collider, builds out the National Synchrotron Light Source II, and expands Brookhaven's impact in AI, quantum computing and networking, energy security, and essential resources independence, among other areas.
