Motivation
The EPICS Developers Meeting and Codeathon provide focused time for EPICS code, documentation, testing, and design work in an environment centered on hands-on collaboration rather than presentations. By bringing developers together away from their normal day-to-day interruptions, the meeting allows participants to make progress on shared development tasks, resolve technical issues, improve documentation, and discuss design choices directly with others working on similar control system challenges. These discussions also help shape the technical direction of the EPICS community by identifying shared priorities and aligning development around the needs of current and future facilities.
Codeathons, also known in other open source communities as code sprints or hackathons, are an effective way to advance current development plans, clear up bug reports, and introduce new developers to the internal structure of a software project. The event typically includes design discussions, individual and collaborative coding, testing and debugging, documentation, and coaching for contributors who are newer to the code base. Participants are also encouraged to help one another by reviewing, testing, and improving proposed changes, strengthening both the software and the broader EPICS developer community.
