November 3, 2004
UPTON, NY - The blues/rock band Great Caesar's Ghost will appear in concert with guitarist G.E. Smith, former "Saturday Night Live" music director, at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory on Friday, December 3, at 8 p.m. in Berkner Hall. Great Caesar's Ghost is a seven-piece band that plays an authentic blend of Allman Brothers and Grateful Dead music, as well as up-temp blues, and material from the early 70s era. Their music captures the spirit of bluesy rock with the sounds of their guitars, Hammond organ, and dual drum kits. Formed in 2003, the Long Island-based band has played at numerous local venues, including the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett.
Band members are Larry Hunter, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and co-founder of the East End Songwriters Guild; Shawn Murray, drummer, who has performed in Europe, Canada and the U.S.; Ray Penney, guitarist, who has played with such greats as B.B. King and Muddy Waters; Ed DiCapua, drummer, who has played with numerous well-known musicians, including The Platters, Louisiana Red, and Greg Allman; Larry Schmid, singer and guitarist, who ran his own recording studio, Applewild Studio, in the early 90s; Peter "Bosco" Michne, guitarist, who has played with such popular musicians as Anton Fig of the David Letterman Band and David Liebman of the Miles Davis Band; and Keith Hill, pianist, who, at age 16, appeared on the "Tonight Show" with Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, was conductor of the Boston Pops, and toured with Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan.

G.E. Smith
G.E. Smith, music director for the Saturday Night Live band from 1985 to 1995, is a seasoned bandleader, composer, guitarist and singer who has played with such greats as Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, and Buddy Guy.
Smith broke into the national music scene as a guitarist in Dan Hartman's tour of Europe and the U.S. in 1977, and, in 1979, he became guitarist for the 1979 Broadway show, "Gilda Live," starring Gilda Radner. From 1979 to 1985, Smith played lead guitar for Daryl Hall and John Oates, recording many hit songs with them. Another big break came in 1985, when Mick Jagger asked Smith to work with him on his first solo album, "She's the Boss." Shortly after, Smith joined "Saturday Night Live."
During his tenure on the hit show, Smith toured for almost four years with the legendary Bob Dylan. Also, Smith was musical director for many special events, including the 1993 Rhythm and Blues Foundation Awards and the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden. In 1995, Smith and his wife, singer/songwriter Taylor Barton, created their own music label, Green Mirror Music. Smith's recent recording on that label is called "Incense, Herbs and Oils."
