About the Brookhaven Photowalk

Brookhaven National Lab is inviting amateur and professional photographers to a behind-the-scenes Photowalk of the Laboratory this fall. Participants will be able to visit and photograph major experimental facilities that are not usually accessible to the public, including the STAR Detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)—the only operating particle collider in the U.S.—and the National Synchrotron Light Source II.

The Brookhaven Lab Photowalk is part of the global Particle Physics Photowalk taking place this spring/summer at multiple labs around the world. In the United States, local competitions will be held at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Sanford Underground Research Facility, and Brookhaven.

Space is limited

Advance registration is required for all participants and will be limited to the first 30 photographers to sign up online. Brookhaven Lab will maintain a waiting list to fill in any cancellations, and registered photographers will be contacted in the event of any openings.

Participants from the 2018 Photowalk at Brookhaven Lab are ineligible for advance registration and will be redirected to the waitlist. Brookhaven Lab employees and their family members are ineligible to participate.

The event is free of charge.

Once you've registered

All photographers will receive a confirmation email for their participation and must report to Brookhaven’s Berkner Hall on the day of the Photowalk. All participants must follow the Brookhaven Lab Photowalk guidelines.

After a welcome and safety briefing, the photographers will be divided into groups. Each group will visit each of the research areas and be given about 30 minutes to take as many photos as they want. A Brookhaven-provided shuttle will transport photographers from one research area to another. The Photowalk will take place rain or shine.

Participants in the Brookhaven Lab Photowalk will have the chance to submit photos taken during the event, and the Lab will feature the best photos in a gallery on our website. In addition, Brookhaven will forward the top three photos to the worldwide Photowalk competition, organized by the particle physics website Interactions.org.
